On Flies, Bees, the Mentally Ill & Deer

Image
"Flies don't bother explaining to bees why shit tastes better than honey." "Do not proffer sympathy to the mentally ill; it is a bottomless pit. Tell them firmly, 'I am not paid to listen to this drivel - you are a terminal fool!' Otherwise, they make you as crazy as they are." —William S. Burroughs By the way, the other day I was out walking in the early morning. It was so quiet and serene--when I looked up and chanced to see a large mule deer roaming the property of a house to my right. He was a magnificent specimen--a tall, healthy buck with an impressive array of antlers upon his wise brow like a crown. No meek and timid deer, he--this buck was proud and fearless, paying me no heed as he sauntered confidently through the front yard, stopping when a fence between the properties barred his path. I watched in eager, resplendent wonder at the glory of nature as the buck stood upon its hindquarters and prepared a graceful leap over the obstruction; a tug ...

Nana's Pigeons: A Short Film

Image
Int. Nana's apartment - morning A quaint and charming living room of an old woman. Black and white photos hung in frames on the wall. Knit blankets and quilts. Antiques and brick-a-brack. A bowl of candy set out on the coffee table. We hear the sound of a walker slowly inching it's way into the living room, driven forward by NANA (80s). Despite her age and solitary living, she is in a lovely dress becoming an old woman. She wears makeup, and seems bright and cheerful. After significant effort, she arrives in the living room, and sits down in her favorite chair. Sighing contentedly, NANA picks up her word search puzzle, before she's interrupted by the sound of FLUTTERING WINGS. NANA looks up, outside her large, sliding glass doors to a small balcony outside. The sun is rising - and she sees two pigeons building a nest in a tucked away corner underneath her balcony's overhang. A smile crosses NANA's lips. She stands up and, with the aid of her walker, crosses the room...
